OVERVIEW
Many of the hazardous chemicals released into the human environment result in exposures that may increase the risk of disease, disability or death. The vast majority of the 80,000 chemicals in commerce have never been adequately tested for their environmental health impacts. A two-pronged strategic response is needed:

•  We believe that in the face of scientific uncertainty, it makes common sense to take precautionary action to reduce exposure to hazardous chemicals.

•  The most hazardous classes of chemicals should be phased out in favor of safer alternatives whenever the substitutes are available and affordable.

The Environmental Health Strategy Center engages in strategic issue campaigns to reduce exposure and promote environmentally preferable alternatives to toxic chemicals. We target hazardous products and materials, such as PVC plastic (also known as vinyl), for replacement with safer substitutes. We track leaders and laggards among polluters to discourage dirty technology in favor of clean production.
The Center also works through partnerships with others to improve environmental health. For example, our work with hospitals promotes more environmentally responsible health care. Working with the public health community, we aim to improve biomonitoring and tracking of chemical exposures and environmentally related diseases.
