Current Campaigns
Click on the campaigns listed below for detailed information about what we’re doing to make chemicals safer, and people healthier.
The Maine Campaign for BPA-Free Food
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a proven hormone-disrupting chemical linked to cancer, learning disabilties, obesity and other health problems. BPA is widely used in food can linings and metal lids on glass jars. It leaches out of these food packages to contaminate the food inside. But safer alternatives exist, and are already in use by some companies. Maine must build on its phase out of BPA from baby bottles and sippy cups to make our entire food supply BPA-free.
Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families Campaign
The Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families Campaign is a nationwide effort to pass smart federal policies that protect us from toxic chemicals.
Enforce Maine’s Kid Safe Products Law
Maine’s Kid Safe Products Act, passed almost unanimously in 2008, establishes a process to protect children from harmful chemicals. The law requires Maine to name a list of chemicals already proven harmful to children, choose a few of the most dangerous for immediate action, and collect information on how broadly these chemicals are used. It also allows Maine to require safer chemicals when alterantives are available and affordable.
Chemicals, Obesity, and Diabetes
Obesity and diabetes have emerged as public health crises in the United States. Ongoing public health efforts are addressing multiple contributing factors including inadequate nutrition and physical activity. Recent scientific research shows that chemical exposures may also be a risk factor. EHSC is bringing together researchers, eductors, and advocates to address the contribution of chemicals to obesity and diabetes.
